Surgical Dermatology and Skin Cancers

Cryosurgery (Liquid Nitrogen Treatment)

Cryosurgery, also known as cryotherapy, is a minimally invasive treatment for skin cancer removal that uses extreme cold to destroy abnormal or cancerous cells. It is commonly used to treat pre-cancerous conditions like actinic keratosis and certain early-stage skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Non-Invasive and Quick

Cryosurgery is a non-invasive procedure for treating your skin cancer, meaning it doesn’t require incisions or stitches. Liquid nitrogen or another cryogenic substance is applied directly to the affected area, freezing and destroying cancerous cells. The procedure is typically brief, often taking only minutes to complete, and is performed "outpatient," allowing patients to resume daily activities shortly afterward.

Mohs surgery for skin cancer or Mohs micrographic surgery is generally considered the preferred option for larger, high-risk skin cancers, particularly on sensitive areas like the face, as it offers a significantly higher cure rate due to its ability to precisely remove cancerous tissue while preserving healthy skin.

Minimal Pain and Recovery Time

Most skin cancer patients experience only mild discomfort with cryotherapy. Many patients describe a sensation similar to a cold insect bite. Recovery time is quick compared to more invasive treatments like surgical excision. Some patients experience redness, swelling, or blistering, but these effects typically resolve within a few weeks.

Cost-Effective

As a relatively simple outpatient procedure, cryosurgery is more affordable than many other skin cancer treatments. It does not require expensive operating room facilities, general anesthesia, or lengthy follow-up care.

Preservation of Healthy Tissue

Cryosurgery targets only the affected cells, leaving surrounding healthy tissue intact. This precision minimizes scarring, even on the face or hands.

Versatility

Cryosurgery is highly versatile and can be used for various types of skin lesions, including small or superficial skin cancers. It is also an excellent option for patients who are not candidates for more invasive procedures due to age, underlying health conditions, or other factors.

Effective for Pre-Cancers

Cryosurgery is especially effective for treating pre-cancerous conditions like actinic keratosis, which can develop into skin cancer if left untreated. Early intervention can prevent more serious health issues.

Cryosurgery offers a fast, effective, and minimally invasive solution for managing certain types of skin cancer. With its affordability, low risk of complications, and ability to preserve healthy tissue, it is a valuable option in dermatological care.
